Gentamicin sulfate is an excellent choice for antibiotic agar plates. This listing is for 1 gram in powder form. 20mg/L (0.02g) should be used in agar formulations. This is enough for approx 50L of antibiotic agar when used as directed. Concentration can be varied as required to achieve best results.
An easy way to measure this is to dissolve this powder in 50mL of water (keep this solution in the fridge, well-labelled) and use 1mL of solution per 1L batch of agar. This is added PRIOR to sterilization, and can withstand autoclave / pressure cooker temperatures.
As a note, this does not protect against all bacterial contamination. It increases your chances, but dirty samples will still require extensive cleanup work. Antibiotic agar should only be used to clean up wild tissue samples and is not a replacement for good technique.
